My name is Josep Ferré I am a PhD student at the University of Barcelona under the supervision of Prof. Aurora Hernandez-Machado.

Besides that, I am also a skydiver (17 freefalls) and scuba diver (40+ dives).

However, I have been fascinated since I got to know the results of Artificial Intelligence in the context of Deep Learning and Big Data. It is really fascinating seeing that we can train machines to understand images and even make them tell you what they are seeing. What deep learning is capable of achieving goes beyond my imagination, and that is why I love exploring different use cases.

I have grown in a small town with less than 300 people censed, surrounded by vineyards where my family cultivated grapes to produce wine. We used to have a coop full of chickens, geese, ducks, pigeons and even peacocks. We also had rabbits, but I don't remember that anymore.

Despite my great childhood (or thanks to it), I am passionate about mechanisms, know-how, technology and investments. The reason why I took the theoretical branch of physics and started investing as soon as I could.

But it wasn't until recently that I discovered that I loved Artificial Intelligence and Electronics in my first start-up job. I even bought a Raspberry PI and sensors to start exploring the field.

About Me as a Researcher

Industrial PhD student, Computational Condensed Matter Physics

Industrial PhD student at Rheo Diagnostics S.L. and Universitat of Barcelona.

My research is shifting towards Scientific Machine Learning: the derivation of system models and integration with artificial intelligence techniques like neural networks. Using scientific (differential equation) and data-driven models, the simulators can be improved to better approximate modelled systems.

I started with phase field models while completing my Master's and PhD at the University of Barcelona, Spain. My research with my advisor, Dra. Aurora Hernandez-Machado focused on the methods for simulating cell advancement and proliferation (angiogenesis); biological models using phase field models. However, together we did some blood state characterisation work by using microfluidic systems with machine learning classification algorithms.

About Me as a Team Lead & Product Manager

Private investment consultant for investors in the biotech sector

At Rheo Diagnostics S.L., I started as a software developer to process and analyse raw data from a laboratory device. Not long after, I got promoted to manage a team to develop an industrializable prototype to identify blood pathologies. In my group were an Industrial Engineer Designer, an Electronics Engineer and a Telecommunications Engineer. We had to outsource some developments, and all worked together to finalise the prototyping. We not only designed the API for the prototype but also designed its cloud infrastructure (at AWS) to become a B2B and B2C scalable device.

About Me as a Biotech Consultant

Private investment freelance consultant for investors in the biotech sector

I am a theoretical physicist with a master's degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, both from the Universitat of Barcelona. I have specialized in biophysics, interfacial phenomena and artificial intelligence. Further, I have worked in a biotechnological startup as a team lead and product manager, developing products for B2B and B2C in healthcare. Additionally, I have been an active investor in stocks and biotechnological startups for more than five years studying businesses and markets and finally basing my decisions on discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis.
